In the Spring of 2017, there were two periods of high water on the Columbia River that contributed to a portion of the riverward levee under Bridgeton Road to erode into the river. To prevent further erosion and protect the levee, staff and contractors conducted an emergency repair to reinforce the levee with soil and rock.In late August 2022, contractors will remove the emergency materials and replace them with coconut fiber mats rolled over compacted soil. A native grass seed mix will then be grown on the mats, which will provide important erosion control until the grasses take hold. Over time, the mats will decompose and other types of vegetation from along the levee slope will begin to grow in and replace the grass. This will create a more uniform appearance and natural surface for fish that pass by the levee during high river conditions.
The project will take place on the riverward levee slope on the northern side of Bridgeton Rd. across from NE 1st Pl. About 10-15 parking spots in Columbia Way West’s secondary “Sailor Lot” will be needed to stage equipment and materials.
Start Date: Monday, August 22nd End Date: Thursday, September 1stConstruction will take place between 7:00am and 4:00pm on weekdays. No construction will take place over the weekend.
Parking: Many of the vehicles parked in Columbia Way West’s secondary “Sailor Lot” will need to be moved by 7am on Monday 8/22. Signs will be posted at the impacted parking spots ahead of time. Please see reverse for additional information.Noise: Construction will take place between 7am and 5pm on weekdays.Traffic: No ongoing disruption is anticipated, however, there may be short delays during the day as large trucks drop off and pick up materials at the site.Safety: Please walk on the other side of the street and avoid standing near the work site while heavy equipment is in use. Please do not attempt to contact the equipment operators onsite. Contact information is provided above if you would like to contact someone regarding this project.
