Pump Station #1 Trash Rakes Replacement

Project Description

Trash rakes are key infrastructure that help to reduce flooding behind the levee system by removing debris and waste from the Columbia Slough before it enters our pump stations.

The existing trash rake system at the MCDD campus was installed outside of Pump Station #1 (PS1) in 1998 and has reached the end of its service life. Frequent equipment failures cause these raking systems to shut down during heavy rainstorms, which often causes our pump stations to have to temporarily shut down until the debris is removed. MCDD is looking to replace this trash rake system with a new trash rake system to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of removing debris in front of the forebays.

To ensure reliability of the system, the project aims to address the following issues by replacing the trash rake system:

1. increase safety and reduce maintenance by having fewer moving parts
2. increase redundancy (increasing the number of rakes from 2 to 5)
3. increase the lifting power (from 1,250 to 2,000 pounds)
4. increase the lifting diameter (from 3.5’ to 11’)

Project Timeline

• May 2018 – Kick-Off Meeting
• May 2018 to June 2020 –Design
• August 2020 to October 2020 – Construction
• October 2020 – Anticipated Completion

Benefit

Protect landowners from the risk of flooding by providing more reliable, efficient, and redundant raking systems, which will help pump stations to function at their best during larger storms.
